If a natural disaster hits will you be ready and prepared? Here are a few tips on how to prepare for a natural disaster.

Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere, and of course they are never something we can fully prepare for. Restrains and pressure can be overwhelming, and it can be easy to make silly decisions. Your daily necessities may not be available to you such a food, clothes and other household items. One way to minimize the stress and pressure, its important to have a plan in place!

1. Gather Information: make copies of important documents you will need for insurance purposes; SSN, birth certificate, etc., Take pictures and document household items before hand.

2. Have a household emergency plan; Choose a contact person and arrange with a friend or family member outside the area to be contacted in case of an emergency.

-Put together an escape planDecide on gathering spots  foot or car, depending on the type of disaster. If the emergency is isolated to your house or block, have a nearby rallying point where you can have a head count. Learn some evacuation routes and run a few practice drills.  In your spare time locate public emergency shelters and learn their rules about accommodations.

– Plan with neighbors so if a flood or a tornado hits when you’re not at home, you know what to do. Have a plan on how you will get in touch, what will be done and where everyone will go.

-Be aware of  basic safety/emergency first aid skillsThe American Red Cross offers classes.

3. Stock supplies; Have an emergency supplies kit handy to ride out any event. This includes:

– radio capable of receiving NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards transmissions available on seven VHF frequencies. Have extra batteries

-A First Aid kit that includes; first-aid manual, antibiotic cream, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and sharp scissors . Store  prescription medications as well.

– Have enough water and food for you and your family for at least three days. Have garbage bags, matches in a waterproof container and personal hygiene products.
